Rhys Collins, born in Swansea, Wales, in 1951, is a respected martial artist celebrated for his lifelong dedication to karate and his deep connection to the traditions of Okinawan karate.

His journey in martial arts is a story of cultural immersion, academic achievement, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Rhys’s early years in Swansea laid the foundation for his disciplined approach to life. His academic pursuits eventually took him to Japan, where he enrolled at the prestigious Waseda University in Tokyo to study Political Science and Economics.

Immersed in Japanese language and culture, Rhys was drawn to the discipline and philosophy of martial arts. In 1969, he began training in Shotokan karate, marking the start of a lifelong journey.

While traveling to Osaka during his time in Japan, Rhys encountered Tamaki Sensei, a master of Okinawa-Te. This meeting proved transformative, sparking a profound interest in the traditional roots of karate and Okinawan martial arts in particular.

In 1979, Rhys returned to the UK and settled in Bracknell, Berkshire. Eager to continue his martial arts journey, he resumed training in Shotokan at a local dojo.

However, the influence of Tamaki Sensei and Okinawan karate lingered in his thoughts. By chance, in 1981, Rhys reconnected with Tamaki Sensei, who had also relocated to the UK that same year. This reunion solidified a mentorship that would shape the rest of Rhys’s martial arts career.

For over four decades, Rhys Collins has remained a devoted student of Tamaki Sensei, wholeheartedly embracing the philosophy and techniques of Okinawan karate. His dedication has earned him the rank of 9th Dan Hanshi and the role of senior instructor of Shinjin-Ryu Okinawa-Te.

Rhys is not only a skilled practitioner but also a passionate ambassador for traditional Okinawan karate. He bridges the gap between history and modern practice, ensuring that the art’s roots and principles remain vibrant. His teachings emphasize respect, discipline, and the value of understanding the essence of karate. Through his example, Rhys inspires martial artists worldwide to pursue excellence with humility and perseverance.

He is regarded by Adam Carter as a true gentleman, a close friend since the early 1980s, and a mentor to both him and the Shuri Dojo. His friendship and guidance have been a constant source of inspiration, embodying the values of karate both on and off the dojo floor.

With thanks to Rhys Collins Hanshi.
