The 'Godoshin'

At the Shuri Dojo, at the beginning of every lesson, the Sempai (senior student) leads in reciting the "Dojo kun" - the main principles of the dojo. In the early 20th century karate philosophy was an integral and important part of karate training. The master's of the time such as Itosu, Miyagi, Funakoshi, Mabuni, all were now reciting the 'Dojo Kun' or 'precepts of the training hall'.

The 'Go Do Shin' (五道心) - "The five way path" of karate, recited at our dojo, is shown below.

The 'Go Do Shin' pictured here, was brushed for Carter-sensei in 2002, by the wife of Mabuni Kenzo Soke closest advisor and friend. This representation of the 'Go do shin' is unique and a one off, brushed on very thin and delicate paper, hence the creases and marks on the paper. On the return journey from Japan, unfortunately the original frames where damaged and the glass broken. The frames replaced soon after. The 'Go Do Shin' now hangs pride of place at Carter-sensei's home.
