Ryukyu Karate Jutsu - Shuhaku-den (琉球空手術 首泊伝) reflects Carter Sensei’s lifelong journey and evolution in traditional Karate-do.
This ryu-ha (branch) does not depart from the principles of Shinjin-Ryu Okinawa-Te; rather, it reflects Carter Sensei’s personal interpretation and dedication to preserving the art’s essence.
Katsumi Tamaki sensei, 10th dan and founder of Shinjin-Ryu Okinawa-Te, was so impressed by Carter Sensei’s knowledge, technical proficiency, and moral values that he granted him the unique honor of pursuing his own vision without being bound by the usual regulations or curriculum. He offered the name "Shuhaku-den".
Rhys Collins Hanshi, 9th dan and General Secretary of the Shinjin-Ryu Okinawa-Te Kyokai, remarked: “Adam, you are the exception, as you are the only person Tamaki sensei has permitted to belong to our organization without the need to follow our regulations and procedures. Many congratulations.”
Tamaki sensei shared his support: “We feel happy to hear of your decision to continue the journey I started many years ago, enriched by your own ideas and philosophies. We respect and support your decision. As you know, the spirit of our Shinjin-Ryu family remains unchanged, even though you now have your own ryu-ha. This means we follow the same journey and wish to maintain a good relationship to continue on this path together. If you ever need our support or help, please contact us anytime.”
Ryukyu Karate Jutsu - Shuhaku-den is not a new style, but a continuation of traditional Shinjin-Ryu Okinawa-Te, shaped by Carter Sensei’s ongoing study and deep respect for the art. It represents his commitment to promoting, preserving, and teaching Okinawan karate, its culture, and its traditions to future generations. This ryu-ha is a significant reflection of his dedication and the enduring value of the art he so passionately practices.
